To Great Bardfield Circular Walk – approx 7.5km

  • Leave Dynes Cottage and turn left.
  • Take the first right on the private road signed to Robjohns Farm & Lake House.
  • Continue along the road until the end when it takes a 90 degree left turn, continue straight across the field to a style.
  • Over the style.  When you emerge from the trees turn left along the edge of the field.
  • Walk along the edge of the field and then follow the footpath sign to the left, down between two fenced fields.
  • At the bottom you will cross a private road leading to a farm.  Go straight over the road and the footpath bends to the right behind the tree.
  • Follow the footpath path past a large metal barn.  The path can get quite overgrown in this section so watch out for nettles!
  • Over the bridge.
  • Follow the path.
  • Over the second bridge.
  • Go left along the edge of the field, then follow the path to the left and over a further bridge.
  • Walk towards the 5 bar gate and let yourself through, closing it behind you.
  • You’ll see an old water mill on your right and a lovely weeping willow growing next to the mill pond on your left.
  • Go past the mill pond and follow the path to the right.
  • At the end of the path you will go left and follow the stream until you find a bridge on your right.
  • The bridge leads to Bridge Street in Great Bardfield.

Stay a while and enjoy the two lovely pubs in Great Bardfield, the Bell and The Vine and the Tea Room.

  • When heading back, walk down Bridge Street, over the bridge and take a left onto Beslyn’s Lane.
  • Follow the lane for approximately 1km. On your left you will see Cooks’s Lane, continue straight on Beslyn’s Lane and then shortly afterwards turn right onto a track that leads onto a field.
  • Follow the track to the left and then continue straight.
  • This track will bring you into Finchingfield.
  • When you reach the main road, cross over and turn right.
  • Just after the post office there is a cut through footpath on your left.
  • Go over the bridge and when you emerge from the cut, turn right on to The Pightle.
  • At the top, turn right and walk past the school. Continue approximately half a mile down Mill Lane to Dyne’s Cottage.

You’re home!
